The broad, pointed petals stand apart in open tiers, so the flower has a clear star shape and the center stays in view.

The color runs from wine red on the outer petals to a brighter pink-red where the sun reaches the inner surfaces. What sets it apart is the stamens: a dense ring of pink-red filaments around a yellow-green seedpod, with a few golden-orange ones mixed in.
