A Story of Serenity and Resilience
Like many great ideas, Ashly Berg’s dream of building a koi pond started small and grew into a massive, fulfilling project. Her story is one of determination, creative problem-solving, and a deep connection to nature. For Ashly, the journey began with a lifelong desire for a peaceful, tranquil space of her own. As a self-proclaimed lover of all things tropical and beautiful, she had always admired koi ponds and knew she had to have one. The thought of creating a "home away from home" in her own yard was a driving force.
The Pond Builder's Journey
Ashly’s journey to becoming a pond owner began in an unexpected way: by turning her bland, boring front yard, which many of her neighbors didn’t even realize existed, into a vibrant oasis. The initial stage was a significant undertaking, as she rented a U35 excavator and began digging the massive hole herself during the COVID-19 pandemic. While she was determined to do it all on her own, she soon realized the value of professional help, hiring a builder to ensure the pond's levels and liner were perfectly installed.
The most significant challenge she faced was moving the huge rocks needed for the retaining walls and the interior of the pond. She had to ensure every rock was stable enough for her to walk on for future maintenance. However, this challenge was a minor hurdle compared to the most frustrating part of the process: protecting her fish from predators. Ashly lives in an area with blue herons, coyotes, raccoons, and even neighborhood cats, all of which pose a threat to her koi. This has forced her to use a net to cover the pond, a feature she hates but knows is necessary for the safety of her fish.
Despite the challenges, the most fun part of the project was designing the aesthetics of the pond once the core structure was complete. Ashly’s love for tropical themes came to life as she added plants that would stay green through Seattle's winters, fountains that created a soothing sound, and special lighting to make the pond magical at night. She has even created a small, second pond to serve as a rescue area for goldfish and other fish in need of a new home. The entire experience has been a constant creative process, allowing her to add new features and plants each year.
Living with the Pond
Ashly’s koi pond has completely transformed her daily life. It has become a source of peace and therapy where she can sit and watch the koi for an hour or two every day. The maintenance, to her surprise, has been less demanding than she anticipated, although she notes that topping off the water due to evaporation is a constant task. The koi themselves are a constant joy, and she has even started sketching them from photos she takes, creating unique pencil drawings for her family.
Ashly's creative passion extends beyond the garden. She has a talent for drawing and often recreates the beauty of her pond on paper. Her intricate pencil drawings of the koi, which she takes photos of and then recreates, are a personal way to celebrate the life she's brought to her yard. One of her detailed drawings, a gift for her family, captures the delicate scales and flowing fins of her beloved koi. Her pond is a testament to the power of a well-designed, naturally balanced ecosystem, made all the more special by the personal artistic touch she puts into every element.
Tips, Tricks, & "Wish I Knew Sooner"
When asked for a single piece of advice for new pond owners, Ashly emphasized the importance of easy access to all plumbing and electrical components. During her build, she buried some of her electrical components, and when one failed, the repair became a difficult and time-consuming task. She also recommends using mesh boxes to protect pond pumps from debris, a simple hack that has significantly reduced her maintenance time.
Reflection
For Ashly, the pond is more than just a water feature—it’s a symbol of peace and a never-ending journey. It’s her personal retreat, a place where every corner holds a different surprise and a new opportunity for growth. When asked what she would say to someone on the fence about building a pond, her message is clear: the effort is worth the reward. The serenity and joy it brings to her life are priceless.
