What Makes Shusui So Special?
The Shusui is the doitsu cousin of the Asagi and one of the oldest "modern" koi varieties, first bred over a century ago. Its magic is the pairing of a soft sky-blue back with a bold zipper of deep indigo scales running down the dorsal line, flanked by warm hi (red) along the sides and cheeks. Viewed from above — the way koi are meant to be enjoyed — a good Shusui looks like flowing water itself.
Fukazawa Koi Farm brings serious size to the variety, and at 18 inches in his second year this male is already ahead of the curve. His even blue back and strong flank hi give him the classic "autumn water" look the variety is named for, with plenty of development still to come.
What to look for:
- A soft, even sky-blue back free of blemishes
- A neat, unbroken line of indigo dorsal scales
- Warm, symmetrical hi along the flanks and cheeks
- A clean, pale head with no clouding
- Smooth doitsu skin with strong luster
- Powerful early growth and body volume
