Koi Quarantine Accessories and Isolation Tank Supplies

A proper quarantine setup is one of the most important investments a koi keeper can make. Play It Koi carries a complete range of quarantine accessories including isolation tanks, portable tubs, aeration kits, small filtration units, netting covers, and treatment supplies designed for safe and effective fish isolation. Every new koi should be quarantined for a minimum of two to four weeks before introduction to the main pond, and having dedicated quarantine equipment on hand means being prepared to isolate a sick fish at a moment's notice.

Why Quarantine Matters

New koi can carry parasites, bacteria, and viruses without showing visible symptoms. Introducing an untreated fish directly into a pond exposes the entire collection to potential disease. Koi herpes virus (KHV) and columnaris are just two examples of devastating diseases that can wipe out an entire pond population from a single infected fish. Quarantine is not optional for serious koi keepers; it is the most reliable way to protect a valuable collection.

Setting Up a Quarantine System

A basic quarantine setup requires a tank or tub large enough for the fish to move comfortably, a dedicated filtration unit or sponge filter, an air pump with diffuser, a heater for temperature control, and a net cover to prevent jumping. Quarantine tanks should never share equipment with the main pond. Dedicated nets, buckets, and siphon hoses prevent cross-contamination. Most koi keepers maintain a quarantine station that can be set up quickly when needed and broken down for storage between uses.

Quarantine Treatment Protocol

During the quarantine period, treat prophylactically with praziquantel for flukes and monitor for signs of bacterial or parasitic infection. Koi medications and parasite treatments are far more effective and easier to dose accurately in the controlled environment of a quarantine tank than in a full pond. Test water quality daily during quarantine, as small volumes are more susceptible to ammonia spikes. Perform 20 to 30 percent water changes every other day to maintain optimal conditions.

Show Tanks and Hospital Tanks

The same equipment used for quarantine doubles as a hospital tank for treating sick fish from the main pond. Show tanks used for displaying koi at events also require quarantine-level biosecurity protocols. Portable tubs and stock tanks in the 100 to 300 gallon range are the most versatile options. Ensure proper nutrition during quarantine with a high-quality staple food to support the fish's immune system during the stress of isolation and treatment.
