UV bulbs lose effective output over time even though they still glow. Replacing your UV bulb annually — ideally at spring startup — ensures maximum algae and pathogen control throughout the active pond season. Play It Koi stocks replacement UV bulbs and quartz sleeves for Aqua Ultraviolet, OASE, and other major UV clarifier brands.
Replacement Guide
UV bulbs should be replaced every 8,000–10,000 hours of use (roughly one calendar year of continuous operation). When replacing the bulb, also inspect the quartz sleeve for mineral deposits — clean with vinegar or replace if cloudy. A dirty sleeve blocks UV transmission as effectively as a dead bulb. Pro tip: keep a spare bulb on hand so you can swap immediately at spring startup rather than waiting for delivery while algae gets a head start.
