Sizing an External Pond Pump
The two key specs are flow rate (GPH at a given head height) and total dynamic head (TDH). Calculate your TDH by adding the vertical lift from pump to the highest discharge point, plus friction loss from pipe length and fittings (approximately 1 foot of head per 10 feet of 1.5-inch pipe). Then find a pump that delivers your target GPH at that TDH. For koi ponds, aim to turn over the entire pond volume once per hour — a 3,000-gallon pond needs approximately 3,000 GPH at your calculated TDH.
