External pond pumps are the workhorses of serious koi pond systems. Mounted outside the pond — typically in a pump house or equipment bay — they connect via plumbing to bottom drains, skimmers, and filters. External pumps run cooler than submersibles (no waste heat in the pond), last longer, are easier to service, and deliver higher flow rates per watt. Play It Koi stocks external pumps from PerformancePro, Sequence & ValuFlo, and other premium manufacturers.
Sizing an External Pond Pump
The two key specs are flow rate (GPH at a given head height) and total dynamic head (TDH). Calculate your TDH by adding the vertical lift from pump to the highest discharge point, plus friction loss from pipe length and fittings (approximately 1 foot of head per 10 feet of 1.5-inch pipe). Then find a pump that delivers your target GPH at that TDH. For koi ponds, aim to turn over the entire pond volume once per hour — a 3,000-gallon pond needs approximately 3,000 GPH at your calculated TDH. Pro tip: PerformancePro's ArtesianPRO and Sequence's 1000 series are among the most energy-efficient external pumps on the market — they pay for themselves in electricity savings within a year or two versus cheaper alternatives.
