Plant Description Name: Colocasia esculenta "Violet Stem" Taro
This gem is a bold statement for the water garden, with 6 foot deep purple petioles (stalks) leading to the giant 3' long green leaves that show a slight hazy purple to them. 1' tall yellow flowers have a wonderful papaya-like fragrance. Although it sends out wild- looking runners, it is a slow plant to spread. Like other taros, it can be grown as a pond marginal in up to 6 inches of standing water. Sun to part shade, up to 6' tall, Zone 8-11
