Waterfall Filters

Pond waterfall filters: a filter and a spillway in one box

A waterfall filter sits at the top of your waterfall, right at the edge of the pond. Your pump sends water into the bottom of the box, the water rises through filter mats and bio media, and then it pours over the lip to start the falls. Because the box is the spillway, the waterfall it heads doesn't need a separate one.

Extra filtration, or the only filter

On most koi ponds a waterfall filter works alongside a skimmer and a main filter, adding biological filtration on the way back to the pond. On a water garden or a lightly stocked pond it can be the only filter. Pond ratings assume light stocking, so for koi choose one rated for about twice your pond's gallons.

How to size a waterfall filter

Start with the weir width, which sets how wide your falls will be. Then check the maximum flow: your pump shouldn't push more water than the box can pass, and some makers also list a minimum for a full sheet. The pond rating tells you how much water the media can keep clean. Match the inlet size to your return line, too.
