Lotus Plants for Ponds and Container Water Gardens
Lotus (Nelumbo) are among the most spectacular aquatic plants in the world, producing massive blooms and distinctive round leaves that rise elegantly above the water surface on tall stems. Play It Koi carries lotus varieties in colors from pure white and soft cream to vibrant pink and deep rose, with sizes ranging from miniature bowl lotus suitable for patio containers to full-size varieties that can dominate a large water garden. Lotus have been cultivated for thousands of years across Asia and are prized for both their breathtaking beauty and their remarkable hardiness once established.
Growing Lotus Successfully
Lotus grow from tubers planted horizontally in wide, shallow containers with at least 12 to 16 inches of diameter. Use heavy clay or aquatic soil — never potting mix with perlite or peat, which floats. Cover the tuber with just one to two inches of soil, taking care not to damage the growing tip. Place the container so the crown sits in 4 to 12 inches of water. Full sun is essential — lotus need a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight daily and perform best with eight or more. Feed heavily with aquatic fertilizer tabs once growth is established.
Lotus Varieties
Full-size lotus like 'Mrs. Perry D. Slocum' (changeable pink-to-yellow) and 'Carolina Queen' (pink) produce leaves and flower stems three to five feet above the water and need large containers or dedicated planting areas. Miniature and dwarf varieties like 'Momo Botan' (double pink) and 'Chawan Basu' (white with pink tips) grow just 12 to 24 inches tall and thrive in bowls, half-barrels, and small patio containers. Both types are hardy to USDA Zone 5 and return reliably each spring after winter dormancy.
Lotus in the Pond Ecosystem
Lotus leaves provide excellent shade that helps control algae and offers shelter for koi fish. However, lotus are vigorous growers that can take over a pond if not contained — always plant in containers rather than directly in pond substrate. Combine lotus with hardy water lilies and tropical water lilies for multi-level visual interest. Add floating plants for additional surface coverage.
