Mechanical Media Guide

Use coarse media (blue or black Matala mats) as the first stage to catch large debris, followed by progressively finer media (green, then gray) for polishing. Replace or rinse mechanical media regularly — a clogged pad restricts flow and becomes a source of ammonia rather than a filter. Pro tip: always rinse filter pads in a bucket of pond water, never tap water. Chlorine in tap water kills the beneficial bacteria that colonize even mechanical media.
