A Benigoi is a koi with nothing to hide behind: one deep red, nose to tail, no pattern.

This guide covers what a Benigoi is, how to spot one, how big it gets, how long it lives, and how to keep the red.

What a Benigoi is

Benigoi means crimson koi: a non-metallic red koi fish, one solid color over body and fins, in Kawarimono. Other varieties are judged on where markings fall. A Benigoi has none, so you buy body and consistency.

How to identify one

Red running unbroken to the fin edges, no second color, no shine. White fin tips are normal on some fish. A metallic sheen means an Ogon-family koi, not a Benigoi.

Looking for a black and red koi fish?

Then this is probably not your fish, and it is worth knowing why before you buy. A Benigoi is solid red with no black anywhere on it. If the fish in your head has both colors, you are picturing a different variety, and the sooner that is sorted out the less likely you are to order the wrong koi.

Two varieties fit that picture. A Hi Utsuri sets red over a black body, with the black wrapping the head and running in bold bands down the fish. An Aka Bekko does the reverse: discrete black markings sitting on a red ground. Searches for a black and red koi fish land on one or the other, and our guide to Utsuri koi covers the first in detail.

Listings write the words in whichever order they please, so koi fish black and red and koi fish red and black turn up the same two varieties rather than a third one hiding behind the phrasing. Read the reversed wording as a duplicate, not a discovery.

One practical test when a seller does list a koi fish black and red under a Benigoi heading: look at the photo rather than the label. A koi fish red and black, whichever way round the words go, has black on it somewhere — and any black at all means it is not a Benigoi.

How big they get

Well-kept Japanese koi are commonly cited at 24 to 28 inches over many years, and Benigoi are described as strong growers. A backyard pond does less: volume, filtration and feeding set the size before genetics does.

The right pond

Standard koi requirements plus one design decision: shade. Long sun exposure bleaches red, and an unshaded pond can sunburn a pale-backed fish outright, so planting or a deeper section protects the color. Cover also hides a very visible red koi fish from herons.

Water parameters

Ammonia and nitrite at zero, nitrate held down by water changes, pH around 7.0 to 8.5, and enough carbonate hardness that it does not swing overnight. Stability beats any target number.

How long they live

Koi are commonly cited at 25 to 35 years. and wintering far more than variety.

Are they good for beginners?

Yes, and better than most. With no pattern to develop or lose, the fish you buy at six inches is broadly the fish you keep. Judge body and even color and you have judged it.

Feeding for color and health

A good staple food, matched to water temperature and fed to appetite, does more for the red than anything else. Color-enhancing foods are widely used and deepen a red that is already good. They will not create one.

Deepening the red

Genetics sets the ceiling and nothing on a shelf raises it. Inside it: clean stable water, unstressed fish, color-support food fed seasonally rather than year-round, and shade. More red is lost to summer sun than food puts back.

Winter care

No variety-specific requirement. Wind feeding down as water cools and stop below roughly 50°F, keep an opening in any ice for gas exchange, and give the pond depth. A fish that looks unwell needs a proper diagnosis first.

Where to buy Benigoi koi from us

Honestly, not from us right now. We have no Benigoi listed and will not point you at a fish we cannot ship. Browse the Japanese koi selection for what is live today, or tell us what you are after.

Whatever you buy, and especially with any multi-fish package: quarantine every new koi in a separate, filtered, aerated holding system for two to four weeks before it goes near your main pond, and stock to the adult size your volume and filtration can carry.

Frequently asked questions

What is benigoi koi and how does it differ from other koi varieties?

A non-metallic koi in solid red over body and fins, classed in Kawarimono. It has no pattern at all, so only body shape and even color are judged. That is also why a koi fish black and red — or a koi fish red and black, the same fish written the other way round — is never a Benigoi: any black at all rules the variety out.

What are the identifying features of a benigoi koi?

Unbroken red to the fin edges, no second color, no metallic sheen. White fin tips are normal on some fish; a metallic shine means an Ogon-family koi.

How large do benigoi koi typically grow?

Commonly cited at 24 to 28 inches for well-kept Japanese koi over many years. A backyard pond usually produces less, limited by volume, filtration and feeding.

What is the ideal pond environment for benigoi koi?

Standard koi conditions plus shade, because strong sun bleaches red. Planting or a deeper section protects the color and hides a very visible fish from herons.

How long do benigoi koi usually live?

Commonly cited at 25 to 35 years.

Are benigoi koi good for beginners?

Yes. With no pattern to develop or lose, the fish you buy is largely the fish you keep, and body and even color are the whole decision.

What water parameters are best for benigoi koi?

Ammonia and nitrite at zero, nitrate low, pH roughly 7.0 to 8.5, and enough carbonate hardness to stop it swinging. Stability matters more than any number.

How should I feed benigoi koi for optimal color and health?

Staple food matched to water temperature and appetite first. Color-enhancing foods are widely used and deepen a good red, but cannot create one the genetics did not supply.

Do benigoi koi require special care during winter?

No. Standard koi wintering: stop feeding below roughly 50°F, keep an opening in any ice for gas exchange, and give the pond enough depth.

How can I improve the red coloration in benigoi koi?

Genetics sets the ceiling. Within it: clean stable water, low stress, color-support food fed seasonally, and shade. Sun bleaching costs more red than food adds back.
