Koi Food

Premium Koi Food from Trusted Brands

Feeding high-quality koi food is one of the most impactful things a pond keeper can do for fish health, growth, and color development. Play It Koi carries a complete range of koi food from the industry's top manufacturers — Dainichi, Hikari, Blue Ridge, Kodama, and Kenzen — covering staple diets, color-enhancing formulas, growth blends, and cold-weather wheat germ options.

Choosing the Right Koi Food

Different seasons and goals call for different formulas. In spring and fall when water temperatures drop below 60°F, switch to an easily digestible wheat germ food. During summer's peak growing season, a high-protein growth formula maximizes body development. For show-quality koi, color-enhancing food with spirulina and carotenoids intensifies reds, oranges, and yellows. Year-round, a staple pellet provides balanced daily nutrition.

Pellet Size and Feeding Tips

Match pellet size to fish size — small pellets for koi under 8 inches, medium for 8–14 inches, and large for mature koi over 14 inches. Feed only what your koi can consume in 3 to 5 minutes, two to three times daily during warm months. Overfeeding pollutes the water and strains your filtration system. Pro tip: hand-feeding builds trust and helps you inspect each fish for health issues up close.

Why Brand Matters

Premium koi food manufacturers invest heavily in ingredient quality and research. Dainichi uses fresh proteins and proprietary vitamin blends. Hikari's decades of Japanese koi breeding expertise inform their formulations. Blue Ridge offers excellent value with U.S.-manufactured feeds. The difference in water quality, fish growth, and color between premium and bargain food is significant and visible within weeks.
