Taro Plants for Water Gardens
Taro (Colocasia) — commonly known as elephant ear — brings dramatic tropical foliage to ponds and water gardens. Their oversized, heart-shaped leaves create bold visual impact and natural shade for fish. Play It Koi carries multiple taro varieties in green, black, and variegated leaf patterns, all suited for aquatic planting.
Growing Taro in Ponds
Plant taro in large containers on pond shelves with the crown at or just below water level. Taro loves heat and humidity — it grows fastest when water temperatures exceed 70°F. In Zones 8 and below, treat as an annual or lift tubers before frost. Full sun to partial shade works well. Pro tip: taro's large leaf surface area creates excellent shade for fish — a single mature plant can shade several square feet of pond surface, reducing both algae growth and water temperature.
Play It Koi offers free shipping on orders over $99. Questions? Contact our pond experts for taro growing help.
