Spillways

Spillways and Waterfall Blades for Ponds and Water Features

Spillways create a clean, uniform sheet of water that adds elegant movement and soothing sound to any pond or water feature. Play It Koi carries a variety of spillway styles including stainless steel waterfall blades, acrylic spillways, lighted spillway boxes, and natural-look waterfall weirs. Unlike naturalistic rock waterfalls, spillways deliver a modern, architectural aesthetic that complements contemporary landscape designs, pool surrounds, and formal garden settings.

Types of Spillways

Stainless steel waterfall blades produce a clear, glass-like sheet of water from a narrow lip. They mount flush to retaining walls, raised pond edges, or purpose-built columns. Wider blades create a dramatic curtain effect, while narrow blades offer a more subtle accent. Acrylic and polycarbonate spillways allow water to flow over a transparent surface for a floating-water illusion. Pondless spillway setups recirculate water from a hidden basin, making them ideal for spaces where a full pond is not practical.

Spillway Installation

Most spillways mount into a wall or raised edge using a built-in flange and waterproof sealant. The supply line connects to a dedicated pond pump sized to deliver the flow rate needed for an unbroken water sheet. As a general rule, spillways require 100 to 150 GPH per inch of blade width for a solid curtain effect. Under-pumping creates gaps in the water sheet, while over-pumping causes splashing beyond the catch basin. Seal the connection point with fish-safe pond sealant to prevent leaks behind the wall.

Lighted Spillways

LED-equipped spillways illuminate the water sheet from behind or below, creating a stunning glowing curtain effect after dark. Color-changing models allow seasonal or mood-based lighting adjustments. Pond lighting paired with a spillway is one of the most visually impactful combinations available for water feature design, turning a daytime accent into a nighttime showpiece.

Combining Spillways with Other Features

Spillways pair naturally with fountain displays for a layered water feature design. Multiple spillways at different heights create a cascading wall of water. In pool and spa settings, spillways connect the aesthetic of the hardscape to the water, blending architecture with landscape. For naturalistic ponds, waterfall boxes with stone lips provide a similar sheet-flow effect with a more organic appearance.
