How to Plant & Care for Lotus
Description
Nelumbo nucifera 'Jian Ning', large pond lotus, shipped as a dormant lotus tuber.
Jian Ning is a tall Chinese lotus that holds its flowers well above the leaves, where you can see them from a distance.
The blooms are a saturated pink to magenta, with broad, pointed petals in an open star shape. The veins show clearly. The outer petals spread wide, and the inner ones stand up around a bright golden-yellow seedpod and a ring of pale stamens.
It's also grown for its seeds, which are known for being good to eat, so you get flowers and a harvest from the same plant.
At a glance
- Flower color: Red
- Flower type: Single, fewer than 20 petals
- Plant height: Tall, 48" and up
- Container: 20" and wider, 12"-18" deep
As a large pond lotus, this one settles at 12 to 24 inches of water over the crown once established. Start a new tuber under 2 to 4 inches and raise the level as it pushes aerial leaves, with the growing tip left uncovered. Pot size, soil and the rest of the method are in the lotus planting instructions.
