Description

Nelumbo nucifera — large pond lotus, shipped as a dormant lotus tuber.

Always a Show-Stopper. 'Pretty is as pretty does' is an old saying that means your actions are as important as your appearance. Well, 'Pretty Flower' deserves its name because it is easy to grow and is a prolific flower producer as well as being a stunningly beautiful flower.

'Pretty Flower' sometimes has green petals on the first day! The full double flower is beautiful every day, though, as it changes to a heavenly velvety cream-colored flower whose petals are tipped in light purple-pink. A sharply pointed tip delineates each petal clearly, giving the flower an unusual presence. One of the most 'organized' flowers in the garden - the petals are beautifully arranged throughout the life of the flower.

At a glance

  • Flower color: Versicolor
  • Flower type: Multi-petal, more than 50 petals
  • Plant height: Tall, 48" and taller
  • Container: 20" and wider, 12"-18" deep

As a large pond lotus, this one settles at 12 to 24 inches of water over the crown once established — start a new tuber under 2 to 4 inches and raise the level as it pushes aerial leaves, with the growing tip left uncovered. Pot size, soil and the rest of the method are in the lotus planting instructions.
