Discover Crystal-Clear Water for Your Pond
Transform your pond or koi sanctuary with the Teton Professional Pond & Koi Filter—a cutting-edge bead filtration system designed for passionate pond owners who demand the best for their aquatic life.
How It Works
Advanced Biological Filtration:
The filter is packed with a large volume of semi-floating biological media, offering an expansive surface area for beneficial bacteria to thrive. These bacteria are nature’s own water purifiers, quickly colonizing the media to establish a healthy ecosystem.
Natural Nitrogen Cycle:
As water flows through the filter, the beneficial bacteria break down harmful ammonia and nitrite, converting them into harmless nitrates through the nitrogen cycle. This process ensures your pond stays safe and healthy for your fish and plants.
Quick Startup, Lasting Results:
Expect the bacteria colony to establish itself within 2–4 weeks, depending on water temperature, fish load, and feeding rates. During this period, monitor water quality closely for optimal results.
Recommended Placement:

Effortless Maintenance:
The semi-floating media makes backwashing a breeze—simply rinse out heavy waste once a week (or as needed) to keep your filter running at peak performance.

XKF Specifications, Sizing and Setup
Check both ratings before you pick a size:
Every XKF model carries a maximum pond size and a maximum fish load, and your pond has to fit inside both. A 9,000-gallon pond holding 400 lbs of koi is already past the XKF9000's 350 lb limit, so that pond belongs on the XKF12000. The table below gives the full specifications for every tank, taken from Teton's product page and its current (July 2025) manual.
| Model | Tank size | Valve size | Valve on | Bio media (cu ft) | Max GPM | Max GPH | Max pond (gal) | Max fish load (lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XKF2500 | 16 in | 1.5 in | Top | 1 | 70 | 4,200 | 2,500 | 100 |
| XKF4200 | 18 in | 1.5 in | Top | 1.5 | 80 | 4,800 | 4,200 | 150 |
| XKF6500 | 20 in | 1.5 in | Top | 2 | 90 | 5,400 | 6,500 | 200 |
| XKF9000 | 24 in | 2 in | Top | 3 | 120 | 7,200 | 9,000 | 350 |
| XKF12000 | 24 in | 2 in | Side | 5 | 140 | 8,400 | 12,000 | 400 |
| XKF16000 | 30 in | 2 in | Side | 6.5 | 160 | 9,600 | 16,000 | 500 |
| XKF24000 | 36 in | 2 in | Side | 11 | 180 | 10,800 | 24,000 | 725 |
Each filter arrives with its media already loaded. If you ever replace it, those are the amounts to use, and the media should come about two-thirds of the way up the tank.
Top valve or side valve:
On the XKF2500, XKF4200, XKF6500 and XKF9000 the multi-port valve sits on top and comes already fitted. The three largest models, XKF12000, XKF16000 and XKF24000, use a side-mount valve: you clamp it onto the tank and connect it to the side ports with unions when you install the filter.
What the valve settings do:
- Filter is normal running. Pond water goes down through the media and back out to the pond.
- Backwash reverses the flow up through the media and flushes the trapped dirt out the waste line.
- After a backwash, Rinse settles the media bed and clears whatever debris is left.
- Waste skips the filter entirely and sends water straight out the backwash outlet. Handy for lowering the pond or a water change.
- Some medications need the filter out of the loop. That's what Re-circulate is for: water goes back to the pond without passing through the media.
- Closed stops all flow to the filter, so you can service the pump without draining the tank.
Switch the pump off every time you move the handle. Turning it under flow lodges debris in the valve's spider gasket, and that leads to leaks and an early valve failure. A thorough clean goes rinse until the sight glass is clear, backwash for 2–3 minutes, rinse again, and repeat until the waste line runs clear. When wear parts need replacing, see our XKF Series replacement parts.
Plumbing it in:
The tank itself is UV- and corrosion-resistant, made to sit outside for the long term. Put the filter on a level concrete slab or very firm ground, as close to the pond as you can, with the valve and drain easy to reach. Choose a pump that delivers close to the filter's maximum flow at your system's total dynamic head, and don't neck down the discharge or waste lines. The inlet and outlet have unions, there's a separate waste outlet for backwashing, and adapters are included if your pipe needs them. If you solvent-weld PVC, give the glue 24 hours to set before you start the filter, and once it's running, note the pressure gauge reading: that's your system's baseline. Adding a UV clarifier? Plumb it in after the filter. The XKF is built for water between 32°F and 105°F; Teton says not to run it outside that range. A pack of SuperBio beneficial bacteria comes with the filter to help the colony get started.
Optional air blower:
Teton built the XAB10K Air Blower Kit to pair with this filter. It adds air during backwashing for a faster, deeper clean of the media.
Warranty:
Teton covers the XKF with a 2-year limited warranty from the date of sale against defects in materials and workmanship. It is given to the original purchaser, and it only applies if the filter is installed and used the way the manual sets out. Parts that wear out through normal maintenance are not covered.
