Customer Corner: The Scottish Koi King of Caliche, Building a Desert Water Sanctuary

You think commitment means seeing a project through? Meet Alasdair 'Ali' Mackenzie  . This former British military man, a Scotsman by birth, didn't just dabble in backyard water features; he battled the sunbaked, rock-solid caliche of an Arizona summer to construct the ultimate koi pond. This isn't just a water feature; this is a five-foot-deep fortress of koi tranquility, built with precision and a lifetime of aquatic ambition.

I sat down with Ali, and let me tell you, his journey to this desert sanctuary is one for the ages.

The Origin Story: From Garden Center Ponds to Arizona’s Dream

So, what lights a fire under a Scotsman in the Arizona desert to start excavating? It all goes back to the roots, literally!

"I grew up around ponds," Ali says, with that distinct Scottish roll. "My mum and dad own a garden center. Had the goldfish pond in the backyard, you know. I was always fascinated by that, running water, seeing fish."

After a disciplined career in the British military, Ali built his first koi pond back in Scotland. It was a good start—about 1,000 gallons—but it was his "training ground" for lessons learned: "I didn't have bottom drains. I didn't have return jets... I didn't make the pond big enough!"

When he and his wife settled in Arizona, the time for compromises was over. The move was the cue for the "forever home" pond. This time, his vision was clear.

"I’m now going to build a pond that’s going to be a forever home," he declared. "It needs to be big enough... I want bottom drains. I want return jets. I want two types of filtration on it. Everything I thought about as the years went past."

The Builder's Battle: Conquering the Rock and Loving the Liner Cut

Every epic build has its villain, right? For Ali, it was the unholy, rock-solid, concrete-like Arizona ground, known as caliche.

"The biggest challenge was the ground here in Arizona," he admits. "You're practically pickaxing away to get through it for hours on end... I only got a couple of inches!"

He faced 112-degree heat, digging out a base for a five-foot-deep pond. His solution to protect the liner? Scrounging old, thick carpets and underlays from neighbors to create a robust cushion. (Brilliant adaptation, truly!)

But the part of the process that was more fun than he expected? The moment of no return: cutting the liner and installing the plumbing.

"I really enjoyed doing things like the bottom drains, the return jet outlets... And that first cut, when you put a Stanley knife onto that rubber, you’re thinking, 'Geez, I’m going to put thousands of gallons of water on top of this and is it going to hold?'"

Watching those three return jets pump water back in with no leaks? That, Ali says, is pure, unadulterated satisfaction.

Living the Koi Life: Water Dogs and Daily Rituals

So, why koi? Ali gives zero hesitation, citing the need for connection and relaxation.

"I can sit out by the koi pond and the fish gracefully move in a different way... I just find it so relaxing."

This pond isn't just a decoration; it's a routine. It’s his decompression chamber. "My decompressed time... will then be just sat at the pond. It's a ritual." The koi, he says, "come up to you like little dogs, you know, and they just sit there. There’s a connection there."

Ali was most surprised by their distinct personalities. He has 16, and they all have names.

Take "The Bruce." He’s the alpha fish, but when the Arizona summer heat peaked, he'd sulk, hiding in the shade. "He was looking at you... I’m telling you, he’s not happy with this weather, big man. You'd be better off in Scotland." But when the temperatures finally dropped? "The Bruce is out there! He’s the first over to feed... back to his old self!" Unbelievable.

Tips and Reflections: Don’t Rush, Don’t Skimp

What advice does Ali, the "Husband in the Hole," have for a brand-new pond owner?

Don’t Undercut on Size: "If it’s going to be your forever pond... don’t undercut on size." It is 8,000 gallons. You need room for these beautiful beasts to grow.

Bottom Drains are Non-Negotiable: "If you’re going to do koi, put in bottom drains. Use them all the time. Don’t skimp..."

And his best hack? It wasn't a product, but a strategy: Do not rush it! Have a clear timeline. He kept his young koi in a filtered swimming pool in his garage for 6 months while construction was underway, ensuring they remained safe and protected.

What does the pond mean to him now? It’s a focal point, a source of peace and pride. If someone is on the fence about building one, he offers this challenge: "If they’re on the fence, then they’re not ready... Get your hands dirty. Get in among it. Know what’s in the ground. Know where your pipes are." He believes the whole experience of building it yourself makes the final sanctuary all the more meaningful.

His next goal? The landscaping around the walls is the only thing left. Beyond that, the five-foot depth, the gazebo, and the dual filtration system make it a predator-proof, clear-water haven. Ali even uses a power jet on a timer as a "koi trainer" to create a current and keep his fish strong and constantly moving—because, as he says, static fish are a tragedy!

Ali’s Arizona koi sanctuary isn't just an incredible pond; it's a testament to the power of a long-held dream, built with military precision, Scottish grit, and a whole lotta love for his demanding, wonderful water dogs.

Technical Plumbing & Flow Design:

A pond’s life-support system is only as good as its plumbing. In this build, the plumbing was engineered to prioritize high-volume turnover, ease of maintenance, and silent operation.

The Primary Filtration Circuit (The Foundation)

To handle the heavy lifting of waste removal, the system utilizes dual 4-inch Aquadyne Rhino II Bottom Drains.

  • The Logic: Using 4-inch pipe for the initial run allows for maximum gravity-fed flow, preventing debris from settling in the lines before reaching the filter.

  • The Transition: These 4-inch lines transition into 2-inch plumbing as they enter the WattMizer PLUS PRO 6.0 System. This transition increases water velocity, ensuring that waste is pushed directly into the  AquaSieve2 Pre-filters for mechanical separation before it ever hits the biological media or the UV clarifier.

Surface Skimming & Feature Return

While the bottom drains handle "heavy" waste, the surface must stay clear of floating debris (leaves, pollen, oils).

  • Independent Plumbing: A dedicated plumbing run connects the Blue Thumb Elite Skimmer to the Elite Waterfall Spillway.

  • Flow Balance: By utilizing 2-inch plumbing for this loop, the system maintains a balanced circulation that creates a "sweep" across the pond surface, pulling debris into the skimmer before it can sink.

Aeration & Oxygen Saturation

Oxygen is the engine of biological filtration. This system doesn’t just bubble for aesthetics; it’s a functional aeration grid.

  • The Source: A Hakko 80LH Air Pump delivers high-pressure air through a Matala Heavy-Duty Manifold.

  • Distribution: The air is split to the integrated diffusers on the Rhino II drains. This creates a "chimney effect," where rising air bubbles pull waste-laden water from the pond floor directly toward the bottom drains, significantly increasing the efficiency of the mechanical filtration.

Material Selection: Hard vs. Flex PVC

This build utilizes a strategic "Hybrid Plumbing" approach:

  • Schedule 40 Hard Pipe: Used for long, structural runs to ensure maximum durability and to prevent sagging or shifting over time.

  • Flexible PVC Pond Hose: Used near the pump and filter connections. Flexible PVC is essential here because it absorbs micro-vibrations from the pump, resulting in a much quieter system and reducing stress on plumbing joints that can cause leaks.
