Description

Nelumbo nucifera 'Southern Starry Sky', large pond lotus, shipped as a dormant lotus tuber.

Southern Starry Sky opens wide, with broad crimson to magenta petals spread around a pale green seedpod. The color runs deepest on the outer half of each petal and shifts between red, magenta and rose as the sun moves across it.

Look at the center. The ring of golden stamens is often tipped in red, so the middle of the flower looks sprinkled with small points of light. It's easy to see where the name came from.

At a glance

  • Flower color: Red
  • Flower type: Single, fewer than 20 petals
  • Plant height: Tall, 48" and up
  • Container: 20" and wider, 12"-18" deep

As a large pond lotus, this one settles at 12 to 24 inches of water over the crown once established. Start a new tuber under 2 to 4 inches and raise the level as it pushes aerial leaves, with the growing tip left uncovered. Pot size, soil and the rest of the method are in the lotus planting instructions.
