How to Plant & Care for Lotus
Description
Nelumbo nucifera — large pond lotus, shipped as a dormant lotus tuber.
Bo Li Fu Ren. The queen of all American lotus, 'Mrs. Perry D. Slocum' is a changeable double lotus hybridized by Dr. Perry Slocum. It took us several attempts to get a 'real' one but this one is absolutely perfect - true to Dr. Slocum's pictures and description! Thanks to Kelly Billings for sharing with us so that we can help re-establish this beautiful lotus. Huge flowers are a luminous pink on the first day with broad outer petals forming a platform for the shorter, frilly petals in the center. Each day brings a new color as the flowers change from pink to yellow to cream.
At a glance
- Flower color: Changeable (Pink to Light Yellow)
- Flower type: Multi-petal, more than 50 petals
- Plant height: Tall, 48" and taller
- Container: 20" and wider, 12"-18" deep
As a large pond lotus, this one settles at 12 to 24 inches of water over the crown once established — start a new tuber under 2 to 4 inches and raise the level as it pushes aerial leaves, with the growing tip left uncovered. Pot size, soil and the rest of the method are in the lotus planting instructions.
