How to Plant & Care for Lotus
Description
Nelumbo nucifera ‘Zhaojun Gu Ying’ — dwarf lotus, shipped as a dormant lotus tuber.
A lotus named after a love story. An Imperial concubine in Han Dynasty, Zhaojun, was one of the four most famous beauties in the history of ancient China. The legend says she gave her life in exchange for her Emperor's life when his wife became jealous. 'Zhajoun Look-Back Shadow' is a tribute to her beauty. It is listed as an exquisite of bowl lotus allowing it to be grown in a very small bowl but it does extremely well in a larger pot or pond.
At a glance
- Flower color: Pink
- Flower type: Multi-petal, more than 50 petals
- Plant height: Small, 18"-24"
- Container: 12" and wider, 8"-14" deep
As a dwarf lotus, this one settles at 2 to 12 inches of water over the crown once established — start a new tuber under 2 to 4 inches and raise the level as it pushes aerial leaves, with the growing tip left uncovered. Pot size, soil and the rest of the method are in the lotus planting instructions.
