Pond plants are aquatic and semi-aquatic species grown in or at the edge of a pond, sorted by how deep the water sits above the plant's crown. Start with coverage, not with varieties
Before choosing a single plant, work out how much surface you need to cover.
Aim for 50–60% of the water surface shaded at the height of summer. Depths are measured from the top of the pot or crown to the water surface, not from the pond floor. This is the single most common planting error.
Deep water: hardy vs tropical water lilies
Water lilies are the plant most people picture, and the first decision is not color — it is whether the lily comes back next year.
Hardy water lilies
Hardy lilies (Nymphaea) are perennial across roughly zones 3–11, which covers essentially all of the continental US. They go dormant in winter and return in spring, provided the rhizome sits below the point where your pond freezes solid.
Plant the rhizome at an angle with the growing tip exposed, in a wide shallow container. Depth then depends on the size class of the cultivar, measured from the top of the pot to the surface:

These are depths to grow into, not targets for planting day. Start any new lily shallow enough that its leaves reach the surface easily and lower it as it grows. Winter depth is a separate calculation. In milder zones, 18–24 inches is usually enough to keep the rhizome below the ice. In zones 3–5, where ice can reach 12–16 inches, lower the pot to 30 inches or more — which means the pond needs a section around 2½–3 feet deep. Tropical water lilies
Tropical lilies are perennial only in roughly zones 9–11. Everywhere colder they are grown as annuals, or lifted and stored dormant indoors.
What you get for that trouble: true blues and purples, which hardy lilies cannot produce; flowers held 6–12 inches above the water rather than floating on it; larger blooms; stronger scent; and night-blooming varieties that open in the evening and stay open into the morning — the only lilies you can actually enjoy after work.
Tropicals need warmth to start. They sulk until water is consistently above about 70°F, which in northern ponds means they do nothing in May and then grow hard from July. Do not judge a tropical lily by June.

If you want one lily and you live north of zone 9, buy hardy. If you want blue, or scent, or flowers you can see in the evening, buy tropical and accept it as a seasonal purchase.
Lotus: not a big water lily
A lotus (Nelumbo) is a different genus with different requirements, and treating it like a lily is why most first lotus fail.
The visible difference: lily pads float on the water and have a notch cut to the center; lotus leaves are round with no notch and stand on stiff stems above the water. Lotus leaves repel water so completely that droplets bead and roll off. One thing to expect in the first season: a lotus produces floating leaves before it produces aerial ones, so a new plant that looks like a lily for a few weeks is behaving normally.
What a lotus needs that a lily does not:
- Heat. Lotus need 3–4 weeks of temperatures above 80°F before they start blooming. In short-summer regions they will produce leaves and no blooms.
- Sun. Most aquatic plants need at least 5 hours of direct sun; lotus and tropical lilies need 6 or more to flower reliably. Below about 4 hours, expect foliage rather than blooms.
- Room, and containment. Lotus run horizontally. Plant one loose in a pond and it will colonize it. Use a container with no drainage holes, sized to the variety: large 20 inches or more across and 12–18 inches deep; medium 16 inches or more across and 10–12 inches deep; small 15 inches or less across and 7–10 inches deep.

Depth by stage — and check which depth anyone means. Lotus depth is published four different ways: water over the soil surface in the pot, over the pot rim, over the pot's base, and total pond depth. The same plant can therefore be described as wanting three inches or three feet, and both can be technically true. Every figure in this guide is water above the soil surface inside the container.
At planting: 2–4 inches above the soil. This is near-universal across growers and botanical gardens, and it is the number to trust.
Once established: raise it, but the published advice genuinely disagrees — from 2–8 inches at the shallow end to 12–18 inches at the deep end, on the same stated basis. Treat it as a range rather than a setting: bowl and dwarf cultivars 2–12 inches; standard and large cultivars 12–24 inches over the crown, which is the documented ceiling. What are bog plants?
Bog plants grow in permanently saturated soil at or just above the waterline, with the crown out of standing water. They are the zone between the marginal shelf and dry ground, and the distinction matters because a bog plant set on a 12-inch marginal shelf will rot at the crown.
